Belarus: Free Ihar Povarau

``
In partnership with BITU, BKDP, the International Trade Union Confederation, IndustriALL Global Union, and the International Union of Foodworkers.

The Belarusian Independent Trade Union calls upon trade unions, workers, trade union activists and human rights activists around the world to send an appeal to the General Prosecutor of the Republic of Belarus demanding the release of Ihar Povarau, a BITU member in Belarus. Together with other employees of the Belarusian Steel Works in Zhlobin, Ihar Povarau on August 17, 2020 in protest over election fraud and violence against peaceful protesters, blocked a road on the territory of the plant. This led to the stoppage of the smelting furnaces for several hours and 350 euros of damage. For that reason Yauhen Hovar, Aliaksandr Babrou and Ihar Povarau had been sentenced to 2.5 to 3 years in prison. Recently, two of the participants in that action were 'pardoned' and released from custody. Ihar Povarau remains in prison to this day. The Belarusian Independent Trade Union considers this sentence both unfair and politically motivated. You can support Ihar by sending a message to the General Prosecutor's office demanding his release.
