Stop Bill 1!

In partnership with NUPGE, The National Union of Public and General Employees is a family of 11 component unions. Taken together we are one of the largest unions in Canada. Most of our 340,000 members work to deliver public services of every kind to the citizens of their home provinces. We also have a large and growing number of members who work for private businesses.

On 29 September Nova Scotia's rookie Liberal government introduced legislation that will, if passed, make sweeping changes to the structure of labour relations in the province’s healthcare system. It would give one person the power to move workers from one union to another, ignoring established practices across the country that have given workers a say in which union represents them. It freezes bargaining in healthcare and bans strikes.

The government says this is all about simplifying bargaining in the province. But when Nova Scotia unions proposed models for multi-union bargaining that have worked and worked well in other provinces they were ignored. Bill 1 was the result.

The Liberals are ramming Bill 1 through the legislative process, and it could be law by the end of the week. But there is still a chance to convince this rookie government to change direction, to withdraw Bill 1.
