Algeria: Free jailed trade unionist Ali Mammeri now
Algerian trade unionist Ali Mammeri, President of the National Union of Public Service Employees in the Culture and Arts Sector (SNFC), has been sentenced to ten years in prison in a case directly linked to his union activities.
Arrested without a warrant in March 2025, he was held incommunicado for four days and reported being beaten and forcibly undressed to extract confessions.
UN Special Rapporteurs have expressed concern about his case, highlighting violations of fundamental freedoms and the misuse of anti-terrorism legislation against trade union rights.
His conviction is part of a broader crackdown, with over 200 prisoners of conscience currently detained in Algeria.
International solidarity is urgently needed to call for his release through presidential pardon and amnesty for all political prisoners.
