Between September 28 and 30, 2026, Egyptian security forces arrested six journalists working for Matsada2sh, an Egyptian fact-checking and news verification outlet. Abdallah Qadri, Mohamed Sharaf, Mohamed Adel, Islam Barakat, Mohamed Mahmoud and Omar Helal were reportedly arrested at their homes and taken to undisclosed locations. They were charged with spreading misinformation on behalf of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, to destabilize public order and societal peace—allegations that Matsada2sh denies. It was also accused of receiving foreign funding.
On 15th October, the state prosecutor renewed the detention of the six journalists for 15 days for the second time! In addition to the six journalists recently arrested, there are 24 currently in jail in Egypt, some of them have been detained for years.
The International Federation of Journalists, journalists and their unions, dozens of regional and international media organisations and freedom of expression support groups have denounced the arrest of the journalists and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all of them, respect for their legal rights, and an end to attacks on independent journalism in Egypt.
